Racing FAQ
For detailed answers to these and any other questions you may have, consult the Membership Handbook or contact a club official.
Can I race on a budget?
While you may see cars out there worth over a million dollars, vintage racing doesn’t have to mean a big expenditure. You can get into a reasonable vintage racing car for under $10,000. What’s your dream? A 356 Porsche? An open wheeled racer? A big-bore Muscle Car? They’re all out there with something for every budget and there is plenty of support to help you do it yourself or get assistance from a race shop.
How much experience do I need?
Vintage drivers have highly varied skill levels. Some drivers have years of experience behind the wheel of a high-horsepower big block, while others may well be having their first race ever at age 70+. SOVREN has a well-designed novice program if you’ve never raced before.
Do I need a license?
You must hold a valid competition license issued by SOVREN or another racing organization such as SCCA, ICSCC, FIA, or another Vintage Motorsports Council member club.
Is it safe?
Like most vintage race organizations, SOVREN is serious about safe driving. That’s why SOVREN vintage racing follows strict safety rules. Contact, off-course excursions, excessive spin-outs, and other risky behaviors meet with strict penalties up to and including suspension from racing. In keeping with the Vintage Motorsports Council goal to “promote the preservation of these cars in a vintage racing format which emphasizes driver safety and etiquette,” SOVREN awards prizes based on participation rather than finishing order.
Is it really racing?
Car racing is more than NASCAR’s brand of orchestrated mayhem. Vintage racers run for fun and competition, but are respectful of each other and the other cars on the track. Yes, they are racing, and racing hard, but with an eye toward car and driver safety. “Take care of each other out there,” is our slogan.
What cars can I race?
SOVREN defines vintage cars as production cars 25 years or older and certain purpose-built race and replica cars of interest. These cars are prepared in accordance with the rules and classes defined in the SOVREN handbook. The rules and classes defined by other Vintage Motorsports Council clubs may also be used in preparing and racing cars with SOVREN. See the Rules page for more details.
Does my car have to be original?
The goal is to keep the cars as close to originality as possible. If it came with drum brakes, you’re supposed to race it with drum brakes! You can make your car as competitive as possible within the racing rules. Before you buy or set up a car for vintage racing, be sure you understand the rules of car eligibility.
What cars will I be racing against?
Cars are grouped in races based on the category of the vehicle as defined in the Car Eligibility Rules, as well as by characteristics such as type and age of vehicle, engine displacement, class of preparation, etc. Grouping decisions are made with consideration for achieving balanced grids and safe, competitive racing.
Can I get involved without being a racer?
Absolutely! Running an event requires the talents of a wide variety of dedicated individuals. Those wanting to lend a hand are warmly welcomed and are rewarded with adventure, camaraderie, and friendship. There are lots of jobs to do, and one of them will be just right for you.
